What is Zakat?

Zakat is one of the pillars of Islam. Obligations upon humans vary: some are performed through the heart, some through the tongue, and others through the body. There are also acts of worship performed through wealth. The greatest of these is Zakat. Zakat brings much goodness to people; it purifies wealth and protects it from calamities.

Who pays Zakat?

Zakat is obligatory for every sane, adult Muslim who has full ownership of wealth exceeding the Nisab threshold for one lunar year.

How much is Zakat?

Zakat is paid at 2.5% of zakatable assets, provided that their value exceeds the nisab threshold. Nisab is defined as the value of 595 grams of silver or 85 grams of gold.

Who is eligible to receive zakat?

Zakat is designated for the poor, the needy, those who administer it, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, for freeing captives, for those in debt, in the cause of Allah, and for travelers.
